The long-awaited redevelopment of the former Port Stanvac oil refinery has taken a major step forward with the release of a bold new Master Plan, and for the cycling community, it signals exciting progress toward a long-held vision.
Among the highlights of the redevelopment is the opening of 40 hectares of coastline to the public, creating access to a stretch of beach that has been closed for decades. This move is not only a win for local residents, but also a major milestone for Adelaide’s metropolitan Coast Park, a continuous shared-use path that, once complete, will stretch more than 70km from North Haven to Sellicks Beach.
Bike SA has long advocated for completion of this missing link in the Coast Park, with the Port Stanvac coastline one of the few remaining gaps in the path. With the Master Plan now in place and a Code Amendment initiated, the potential to extend the Coast Park through this area is now firmly on the table.
The broader development will see the 230-hectare site transformed into a mixed-use community, with new housing, jobs, open space and beach access. More than 30% of the site is earmarked for green space, including opportunities for walking and cycling infrastructure along the coast.
